Was gifted an RD40 from an audie friend last week, downloaded the manual, but didn't know the procedure for oiling the well. Seems in good operating condition although lots of surface crud from being exposed to coastal climate from new, has a Sumiko Talisman S cartridge that smokes my fairly new Blue Point Special EVO III and was.
- Hope to put the finishing touches on one in the next few weeks odd for my Ariston RD40. That's be a 1st for the RD40: TT AC motor power supply with variable speed. Been looking for the original DC motor and controller but it just doesn't turn up anywhere.

I just picked up an Ariston RD40 from a local buy/sell group for ten dollars; judging from the thick layer of dust on it, it's been sitting in a grimy basement for a long time. The seller (who I doubt was its original owner) didn't seem to know what it was or what it's worth, although he kindly pointed to the spindle and said 'that's where yer records go, but it just got the one speed, eh'. After bringing it home we checked the serial number with the police, but it's not showing up on their database, so I guess it's mine.
I took it to a local audiophile place (they're really reputable) for a checkup and it looks like it's spinning up nicely. Dropped a new Ortofon cartridge onto it. The tech balanced the tonearm - which he identified as an Enigma - and it does sound really nice, at least to my inexperienced ears.
